Our Hearts are Beating for “Hearts & Hoofbeats” 2016!

By | Debra Dear, News, Support VGL, VGL Events

We are firm believers in the saying: “Teamwork makes the dream work.” And when it comes to a grassroots organization such as Vanguard Landing, it is absolutely true! We are so grateful for our community supporters and sponsors who have stood side by side with us to make giant leaps and bounds toward breaking ground on the future residential community for adults with intellectual disabilities.

We are committed in our mission to give these individuals another choice for where they want to live, work and recreate, and our efforts are bolstered by those in our community and from afar who contribute to support the cause. We have had supporters in the form of parents, local politicians, local businesses and other non-profit organizations, educators, business owners near and far, and simply those who have a special place in their hearts for the pressing need for better alternatives for this population.  We have said it once before and we’ll say it again: Vanguard Landing would not be possible without the community around us coming together to support this vision. Watch our Executive Director Debbie Dear talk about this exact issue in this short video:

Just this week, we were able to partner with a local favorite restaurant, ShoreBreak, to take part in a fundraiser event for Vanguard Landing. We raised $621.84 at this fundraiser event, sold a few tickets to our upcoming events, and were able to spread awareness on what Vanguard Landing is all about. Thanks ShoreBreak for hosting us!

We are now a little over a week away from our much-anticipated 3rd Annual Hearts & Hoofbeats event on October 22nd, and we are so excited to host everyone at the property for this year’s event!

There’s a little something for everyone at this year’s Hearts & Hoofbeats event. Whether you can’t wait to jam to the sweet vocals of Trent Harmon, enjoy delectable food by Sweetwater Cuisine, test your luck at fun casino games with Astro Entertainment, or simply mingle with new and old friends, we can’t wait to see you there! Tickets are still available here, but not for long. You do not want to miss out on this night of festivities and fundraising for Vanguard Landing!

PLUS we will be announcing the lucky winner of our 2017 Mustang Raffle during the evening on Oct. 22nd. It could be you! We still have just over 100 tickets up for grabs to win this beautiful car. Remember – we are only selling 400 tickets, meaning you have a 1 in 400 chance to win! You can even increase your odds by purchasing more tickets!

No matter what brings you to the farmhouse for Hearts & Hoofbeats this year, we can promise you’ll have a great time.

Spring is here, and there’s a buzz around Hampton Roads that isn’t just from the bees! In the past few months, we have hosted four Open House events for parents, put the finishing touches on our master site plan, opened our logo shop at the farmhouse, filmed a commercial with Channel 13 for the upcoming “Give Local 757” event in May, partnered with Panera’s in Red Mill for a special fundraiser event, and SO much more!

Vanguard Landing has been bustling with activity lately and we have some exciting updates to share with you. We are often asked what is holding up breaking ground on our residential community for those with intellectual disabilities, and in the video above, our Founder and Executive Director, Debbie Dear, shares some updates on the project’s current status, as well as what lies ahead in the next few months.

We have several more video blogs we will be sharing throughout the month of April! Subscribe to our blog and follow our Facebook page to stay up to date with the latest updates on the status of Vanguard Landing.

9052754_sSpring is arriving at Vanguard Landing and with it comes the trees budding out and the daffodils blooming, the birds singing and the promise of new beginnings! This new “community within a community” will be a brand new beginning and will provide hope for so many families who have a family member with an intellectual disability!

Once you see what a day in the life is like for people living and working at one of our sister communities, it is a “no-brainer” for how wonderful of an option it is!! Take a look at some of the websites of them listed below and it will give you a glimpse of what life will be like at Vanguard Landing! Our “sister” communities across the country are all thriving and full with waiting lists so the sooner you get your family member on our Waiting List, the better the chance they will get in when they are ready!

It takes planning to provide for our exceptional children…simply waiting for a free anything will put your family member at risk. There is NO FREE anything coming!!! Our children with ID usually do not cost us high college tuition bills and expensive weddings. We have to remember when the government provided for people with intellectual disabilities in the past, they were attacked and abused and treated horribly in state institutions. Most of us would not even consider sacrificing our children’s safety just to get them somewhere for free. Fast forward to the world today and every parent I know wants their exceptional child to have a full life with as many opportunities as possible but with safety in mind.

Vanguard Landing will be the first of this new innovative and progressive type of planned community in this area…….the first set of Admissions Packets were mailed out a few days ago……it appears that we will be full before we open the doors so it is my best advice to any family that reads this to request a Letter of Intent quickly and get them started in the process!!

It’s almost time for our GIVE LOCAL 757 Fundraiser so please support this! The more money we raise, the faster we get built and the faster we are up and running, the faster we can build our Scholarship Endowment to help offer scholarships! It takes a village and it takes EVERYONE giving and helping to make this happen!!!!

Join us in this amazing adventure and be able to look at this soon and say you helped create a “Place Where Exceptional People Will Live Extraordinary Lives”!

2014 has been an extraordinary year for Vanguard Landing! we held our first Signature Event- Hearts & Hoofbeats in April at the beautiful Cedar Hall Farms owned by Holly & Paul Veber! We closed on our beautiful 75 acre parcel of land and adopted the 2020 Princess Anne Road address. We partially renovated the circa 1855 Farmhouse to be used temporarily as our office and meeting space. We participated in the GIVE LOCAL 757 Event in May and the Ping Pong Tournament for Charity in September. We leased some of our acreage to our favorite farmer to raise some much needed funds. We are currently working on design and construction planning and seeking financing to start the building process and of course accepting donations to help create the Vanguard Landing Campus & Community.

heart-tree-320x320During this month of “Love”, LOVE is definitely descriptive of the Vanguard Landing Headquarters! We were chosen as a recipient charity for our friends at Blu Skyy Realty and we so appreciate that!

We are pleased to announce that we are kicking of the start of planning for our 2nd Annual Hearts & Hoofbeats Signature Event- scheduled for October 3, 2015 at the beautiful Cedar Hall Farms in Pungo! Watch the Event’s Page of the website to join the committee or volunteer support team! We invite all to join the fun of this event!

We are also excited to be a charity partner for the Table Tennis for Charity Tournament for the 3rd year, coming up September 11-12, 2015! Ping Pong is good for the brain!!

Our partners in Construction/Design planning have been working with us in moving forward to complete our revised Site Plan. Vanguard Landing will set a new benchmark for how communities can look and function!

We hope everyone is enjoying the new and improved VGL Website done by Samantha Baker and our revised logo done by Brittany Day! It takes the gift of all to bring a dream to reality!

The time is definitely now for our supporters to begin to sign up to be Guardian Angels, to consider making a donation, and to watch for the upcoming Naming Opportunities List! We need the community to continue on this journey with us to create Vanguard Landing… Where Exceptional People Will Live Extraordinary Lives!!!

600_debbie_and_lindseyHappy 2015 from Vanguard Landing!! This year is going to be an even more amazing year for VGL than 2014- and it was a fantastic year!!
We have been working diligently to get the entire campus designed and priced and NOW is the time for everyone to step up- as some of you already have- and get the dollars rolling in!!! We will soon begin the Full Campaign with all sorts of ways to give and pledge and claim naming opportunities but right now an easy way to start is to become a “Guardian Angel”!!!! This link is on our website. It is simply a regular monthly pledge made and sent to us for any amount from $25.00 and up that you mail in! You will receive confirmation of your pledge and a welcome into this very important group and then the rest is easy! We will not bill you! You just mail it every month! Please consider doing this today!!!
It is going to take a village of believers to help fund the creation of this amazing planned community and if everyone pitches in we can all take pride in it and get it done quickly!
The time is now…….. It is time to create Vanguard Landing – “Where Exceptional People Will Live Extraordinary Lives!”

Warmest Regards, Debbie
